Operation Starfish

Projects

Each year, Church of the Nativity has taken on additional projects to ease the suffering in Haiti.

  • STARFISH I, in 1998, built 27 houses in Canapé-Verte
  • STARFISH II, in 1999, equipped a desperately needed mobile medical clinic
  • STARFISH III, in 2000, rebuilt The Little Children of Jesus Home in Lizon for precious special-needs children whose previous home was destroyed by fire
  • STARFISH IV, in 2001, began the development of "Nativity Village" with 27 houses and a community sanitation facility in Merger.
  • STARFISH V, in 2002, continued the development of Nativity Village with another 120 houses. The dangerous roof of the small church serving this community was also replaced.
  • STARFISH VI, in 2003, brought the total number of houses built in Nativity Village to 296 single units. Another sanitation block was completed.
  • STARFISH VII, in 2004, continued work toward the goal of providing 500 families in Nativity Village with safe shelter. By the end of the year, only 11 double units remained to be built.
  • STARFISH VIII, in 2005, saw the completion of the 500 houses and the beginning of Phase II – construction of a school, a food program, job training, and several entrepreneurial and small business projects. Education and health care will be improved and a self-sustaining revenue stream will be developed for the residents of Nativity Village.
  • STARFISH IX, in 2006, began development of a new Nativity Village community on the north coast of Haiti. This second Nativity Village includes construction of houses, development of a fishing village on the coast and an inland tilapia farm.
  • STARFISH X, in 2007, opened a third Nativity Village project at La Linea in the mountain frontier on the Haitian border with the Dominican Republic. Housing, water wells and sanitation will be provided, with a fruit tree orchard planned for the future.
